To know Essie was to love her. She had a heart of gold and a kind, caring spirit. Her love for God guided her entire life. Essie enjoyed painting, quilting, sewing, tennis, and playing a variety of instruments including the accordion, harp, piano, and organ.
Essie was born on March 24, 1932, to Evelyn and John Gullickson in Miami, Florida. After graduating from Miami High School, she attended Stetson University, where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority.
Essie married her high school sweetheart, Jim Yonge, and they settled in Orange Park to raise five children. While creating a loving home, Essie also served as an organist in several local churches, taught Sunday school, hosted many Young Life events, and taught 7th grade Biology at Wilkinson School. Later, she studied Interior Design in Atlanta and created beautiful homes for families in Jacksonville.
One of Essie's most cherished memories was serving as president of the Women’s Group at St. Peter’s Church. She brought together her love of Jesus, crafting, fellowship, and organization to make a positive impact on the lives of many.
In 1987, Bill Halligan asked for her hand in marriage. They enjoyed a lasting, loving union, splitting their time between Orange Park and Maine. In the quaint town of Lubec, she opened the Ridge House Gallery, bringing cultural events, Maine keepsakes, and art to the community.
Services will be held at Oaklawn Cemetery on Tuesday, July 16th, at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in her honor to a charity of your choice.
