

2011. He was born on December 4, 1928 in Greenville,
SC, son of the late Eurid Reid McAuley, Sr. and Harriet
Thomasson McAuley.
Reid grew up in Charlotte, NC and graduated from
Central High School in 1947. He graduated from the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC in 1951
with a BS in Chemistry. He was a member of Phi Beta
Kappa and Phi Kappa Sigma. He graduated from Duke
University School of Medicine in 1955 and interned at
the University of Virginia.
Dr. McAuley served in the United States Air Force from
1956- 1958. He was a captain and a flight surgeon. He
continued in the Reserves until 1961. He was stationed
in Formosa and Korea and at Hill Air Force Base in
Utah.
Dr. McAuleys medical training included a two year
residency in general surgery at the VA Hospital in Iowa
City, Iowa and a three year orthopedic residency at the
Campbell Clinic in Memphis, Tennessee and the
Jacksonville Hospitals Education Program.
He received his board certification from the American
Academy of Orthopedic Surgery in 1964. He was a
member of the Duval County Medical Society, the
Jacksonville Orthopedic Society, and the Florida
Orthopedic Society. He practiced for 27 years, serving as
chief of Orthopedics at Memorial Hospital for 4 years,
retired for 3 years and then went back to work from
1995-2007 at the VA Hospitals in Jacksonville and
Daytona Beach and was also a consultant for the
Department of Labor in Jacksonville.
Dr. McAuley met his wife of 52 years, Erolyn (Lyn) at
the UNC Chapel Hill Medical School in 1959. He was a
member of South Jacksonville Presbyterian Church and
San Jose Country Club and was a 32nd degree mason.
He enjoyed travel, golf, hunting, fishing and spending
time with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Erolyn Jenkins McAuley; his
children Byron (Bo) Reid McAuley and Michael Lee
McAuley (Lea) both of Tallahassee, Florida; four
grandchildren Nicole, Erica, Caleb, and Jacob, his sister
Ada Lee Pitts (Roland), nephew Eric, and niece Amanda
all of Mechanicsville, Virginia.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 3,
2012 at 11:00 A.M. at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home,
4115 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville, Florida 32207,
with Pastor Vincent Kolb officiating. A reception will
follow at the Funeral Home.

Presbyterian Church, Mayo Clinic or a charity of your
choice .
