OBITUARY

Flora Basso Horne

July 17, 1930July 6, 2018

A beautiful rainbow appeared in the sky as the Lord was calling Flora Basso Horne, 87, home to join her beloved husband, Fred, on July 6, 2018. Surrounded by family, she passed peacefully at Baptist Hospital a day after a sudden cerebral hemorrhage. Honest and direct, Flora was “something special” to all those who knew her. She brought everyone laughter, love, and more than a few surprisingly touching moments. Born July 17, 1930 to Italian immigrants Ettore and Aurelia Basso in New York City, Flora moved to Jacksonville when she was 18 and had a long career as a legal secretary. She worked for attorney Frank Watson and then for Judge Major B. Harding. Later she served as an executive secretary for Koger Properties. After she retired in her 70s, Flora spent her time volunteering at St. Vincent’s Hospital, River Garden Nursing Home, and at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, where she was an active member. She loved puzzles, playing cards and getting together with her friends, but her heart was always with her family. Family time was her happiest time.

Flora is survived by her three children, Teri McCathern, Jim Horne (Madge), and Elizabeth Miller (Bryan); grandchildren, Tyler McCathern, Brian Horne (Jacqueline), Jamie Horne and her fiancé Spencer Coto, Makenzie Francis (George), Peyton Miller, Catherine Miller, Julia Miller, and John Michael Miller; great grandchildren, Carmella McCathern and Launi McCathern, Annaleigh Horne, and Charlotte Francis; brothers, Joe Basso (Janie) and Richard Basso (Hilda); nephews and nieces, Scott Basso, Ronald Heinicke, Susan Hall (John), Eddie Basso (Carol) and their sons Taylor, Justin, and Jeremy, Linda Ormanowski (Jim) and their children Jordan and Tanner, and Joey Basso (Amy) and their son, Bailey.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 13 from 6-8 p.m. with a Rosary beginning at 7 p.m. in Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home of Mandarin. Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, July 14 at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Main Catholic Church, 11757 Old St. Augustine Rd. Jacksonville, FL 32258.

Flora was adored by anyone who had the opportunity to meet her. She will be missed beyond words, but we know she is now singing with the angels in her unique operatic style.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the “Mandarin Food Bank” at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 11730 Old St. Augustine Road, Jacksonville, FL 32258. Church.

Dear Teri and Jimmy,
It's been a long time since I have seen you guys, but I have such fond memories of our growing up together and all the hours we played together on
Rennselaer Avenue! Seems like a lifetime ago, but I remember your sweet Mama so well. She was always so kind to me and full of fun and laughter -
and so beautiful! I spent many happy hours playing with you, Teri - either at your house or at Mama Basso's - another sweetheart!!
I am so sad to hear of your loss, but know you are at peace with her now being with the angels. It is so very difficult to lose our parents - I miss my own
sweet Mama every day...
You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Hope all is well with you...

Peace be with you,
Pamela Moore Cross

Thank you to everyone for your support of the family and for being a part of the celebration of Flora’s life. Your thoughts and prayers, kind words and notes, and hugs and kisses mean the world to us. Although we feel the pain of loss today, I know that we are each better for having Flora in our lives, and for that we are grateful. Thank you for the strength you have given us to keep going. Your support means more than you could ever know!

I recall my first meeting years ago with sweet Flora. She impressed me as being sweet and loving, yet very strong in her love and faith. I especially sensed the love between her and her family, the Miller's. Can't wait to see her again in heaven. RIP sweet girl. XO

To each and every family member, you were blessed with this beautiful woman and now must cherish the memories and love you are so fortunate to have. I did not know her but from reading the sentiments of others she was a special gift from God. May she Rest In Peace.
God Bless you all.
Sincerely

What a beautiful woman, even at 87, with those lovely eyes. She was beautiful on the inside, too. When someone so special becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure.

I was totally shocked when I read about her home coming. She was always so sweet to my girls and me. She always found the silver lining in life....even when we only saw red. She loved everyone and would help in any way. She will be greatly missed.

Prayers for the family. I have so many fond memories of Flora. Great trips to Jacksonville and spending time with her when she would come to Columbia to visit. We had lots of laughs together.
