Fred Salada

George Frederick (Fred) Salada, 84, of Jacksonville, Fla. formerly of Bradford, PA, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 due to a fatal heart attack that culminated an ongoing battle with heart disease.

Mr. Salada, the son of the late George L. and Julia A. Griffith Salada, was born in DuBois, PA on Sept. 15, 1928. When he was just a young child, the family moved to Bradford, PA where Mr. Salada completed his education. After graduating from Bradford Area High School on June 2, 1949, Mr. Salada was unable to enter military service due to a medical disability, so he entered the work force. After a short stint as a bell hop at the Emery Hotel, he was employed by Airco Spears where he diligently worked and rose through the ranks achieving supervisor status. He then was hired by Boise Cascade Can Company where he was employed until his retirement. Upon retirement, Mr. Salada divided his time between Jacksonville, Fla. and Bradford, PA so he could be with family and virtually play year round the game of golf that he loved so much. Then in 2010, due to health reasons, Mr. Salada made Jacksonville his permanent residence.

Mr. Salada was an avid outdoorsman with a variety of sports interests including boating, hunting and fishing. However, his greatest love was golfing, especially at Pine Acres Golf Club with his son Greg, his nephews and his friends. Fred also enjoyed watching boxing, socializing at The Eagles and The Moose and playing poker and Skat where he was known to "bend the rules" just a bit. Fred was small in stature, but was a tough feisty man with a big heart who spoke his mind and would never walk away if there was a wrong to be righted. He was frugal due to tough times as a child, but geneous to a fault when helping family members. He was a faithful Powerball player fervently hoping to win just so he could gift it to his family. He dearly loved and cherished his family and was often quoted as saying "Family is the most important thing!" Fred will be remembered for many things, but perhaps none more than his warm smile, his infectious laughter and his art of storytelling that he had truly elevated to an art form.

Mr. Salada is survived by his son Greg (Jennifer), his grandchildren David Salada (Jordana Greenberg) and Gretchen Salada (Jason Bates) and his beloved great-grandson Brayden Bates, his sister-in-law Ruby Salada, many nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends who all brought a smile to his face and joy to his heart. Mr. Salada was preceded in death by his parents George L. and Julia A. Salada, his sister Della C. (Peggy) Korb and his brothers William, Richard and Donald Salada. Fred will be greatly missed and his memory will be cherished by one and all.

Services of Remembrance will be held in both Jacksonville, Fla. and Bradford, PA at dates yet to be determined. Due to his great love for children, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in lieu of flowers.
