Gene Douglas Garland passed peacefully at his Summerfield, Florida, home on December 1, 2025. Born in Elizabethton, Tennessee, on May 14, 1944, Gene was known for his outgoing nature and wide circle of friends; he truly never met a stranger.
Throughout his life Gene was a huge sports fan (both as a player and spectator) his entire life including snow skiing, basketball, softball and playing at the game of golf. One highlight for Gene was attending the very first Monday Night Football Game in 1970 between the NY Jets and Cleveland Browns.
Gene was a graduate of FCJ and accumulated over 35 years of experience in the computer industry. Throughout his career, he demonstrated exceptional proficiency in comprehending complex technological concepts, particularly during a time when computers had yet to become commonplace in daily life.
Gene was preceded in death in 2010 by his beloved wife of 47 years, Carol Garland; sister June Bagi; and brothers Archie Garland Jr., Richard Garland and Kenneth McQueen.
Gene is survived by his two devoted daughters, Patricia (Don) Dean of Palm Coast and Debbie (Mike) Young of Jacksonville, and his sister, Kathy Perkins of Tennessee.
“Grandpa Gene” will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Cody (Sheena) Jones, Zach Jones, Shelby (Shane) Rose, Lia Dean, Steven Young and fiancé Lauren Flora and Ryan (Marissa) Young, as well as his 3 adored great-grandchildren, Adyn Jones, Bailey Jones and Jonah Young.
Gene's warmth, humor, and generous spirit touched the lives of everyone he met. His legacy endures through the family he deeply loved and the many people who had the privilege to know him and call him their friend. May he rest in eternal peace, and may his memory continue to bring comfort and inspire all who loved him.
Donations may be made in Gene’s name to Salvation Army of NE Florida, or a charity of your choice.
