

Helen Poulos Magos fell asleep in the Lord on Saturday, November 16, 2019 after a courageous battle with cancer. A native of Jacksonville, Florida, she was born on November 9th 1943, the youngest of three daughters, born to her loving and nurturing parents, George and Cecilia Poulos. George was from Kalamata, Greece and Cecilia was of Spartan heritage born in Lenore, North Carolina...
Helen graduated from Robert E Lee High school in 1961, where she excelled in her academics. She received her bachelors degree from Florida State University in math education in 1964, and later received her Masters Degree from UNF.
Helen married Milton Magos from Jacksonville, FL in December of 1964. They moved to Louisville, Kentucky where her husband pursued a Dental degree and she taught at Jeffersonville High School. She truly loved her work and even chaperoned students on out of town basketball games. When they returned to Jacksonville, Helen maintained her teaching certificate for many years. She started one to one tutoring and had great success helping many young students raise their grades to excellent status which also helped raise their self esteem and confidence levels.
Helen was a lifetime and faithful member.of St John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church. She was a member of the Philoptohos (friend of the needy) the Philanthropic auxillary of the Church. She was an amazing and wonderful wife, a loving and nuturing Mother and she dearly loved all six of her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband Milton, her son Tony (Mary) grandchildren James, Nicholas, and Victoria, her daughter Laurie (Neil) and grandchildren Katelyn, Helena, and Nathan. She is also survived by her sister Mary Marinos and nephews, Michael and Ted Marinos and her nephews Ted (Amanda), and Greg (Melissa) Anastasiou. Helen was predeceased by her sister Evelyn Anastasiou.
This obituary cannot possibly include the countless lives that Helen's kindness, quick wit, good advice, and mere presence touched and comforted. We miss you dear Helen! We look forward to the time when we shall be gathered together in the presence of the our Merciful Lord and God.
A Trisagion service followed by a reception will be held at St John the Divine at 3850 Atlantic Blvd at 6:30 pm Wednesday November 20th with Funeral services November 21st at 11am, followed by interment at Oaklawn Cemetery, 4801 San Jose Blvd. A traditional mercy meal will be held back at St John the Divine following the interment for fellowship.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in honor and memory of Helen Magos to St. John the Divine Capital Campaign Fund 3850 Atlantic Blvd or St. Vincents South Community Hospice.
