

H. Herschiel Brookins passed peacefully on August 1, 2014. Herschiel was born February 24, 1931 in Chiefland (Levy County) Florida to Foster and Parnie Brookins (both deceased).. Herschiel graduated from Chiefland High School and started his career with the City of Jacksonville.
He married Peggy Parrott, his loving wife of 49 years who passed away April 28, 2003. He joined the US Naval reserves in 1950, proudly serving until he retired in 1984 at NAS Atlanta Georgia. He flew missions to some 40 to 50 places overseas including Cyprus and Vietnam. After 23 years with the city he retired as Assistant Superintendent of Streets and Drainage. Upon his retirement from the city he became the Project Engineer for the construction of Sawgrass. He later was the General Superintendent of Ivy H. Smith Company then formed his own company Brookins Utility Inc. He was most proud of the fact that he fully retired in 2002 after working 53 years without missing one day of pay!
Herschiel was a Master Mason of Temple Lodge #23 of Jacksonville. He was also a member of the Fleet Reserve Branch #91. He was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by his 2 daughters, Cheryl Brookins Pearthree, Terri Herrick Bond, and son Denton Gregory Brookins. His sister, Betrenda Mims (A.J.) and brother William Thomas Brookins (Laura). He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Herschiel was also very well loved by Connie, her daughter Pam (Mike) and Misaiah Ibous and many other close friends and family.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from five o’clock until seven o’clock in the evening on Monday, August 4, 2014. Funeral services will be held at ten o’clock in the morning on Tuesday at Hardage-Giddens Hendricks Chapel. Interment will follow in Mandarin Cemetery.
