Cantor Henry Butensky, 94, formerly of Livingston and Boynton Beach Florida passed away on Tuesday May 3, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Sally with whom he spent 68 loving years of marriage, Cherished father of Helaine & Jerry Lazarus, Jan & Barbara Butensky and Sanford Butensky, Adored grandfather of Mathew Lazarus, Tobi & Sean Lebowitz, Perry & Erica Lazarus, Paige & Lee Lemay, Izaak Butensky and Samantha Butensky and 6 great grandchildren.
Cantor Butensky is Cantor Emeritus of Temple Beth Shalom, Livingston where he served for 40 years as their beloved Hazaan, “the man with the golden voice” before moving to Florida and serving as a Cantor in synagogues in both Boynton Beach and West Palm Beach.
Cantor Butensky’s life revolved around family, Temple, and the Jewish Community worldwide. Cantor Butensky’s love of community and Israel was manifested in a multitude of ways…Leading over 800 visitors to Israel and being on the forefront of the Israel bond program for bar and bat mitzvah children, being awarded the Gates of Jerusalem medal and the Shalom Award for work on behalf of Israel.
He was a veteran serving as a Sergeant with the 66th Infantry in liberating concentration camps and then later speaking to New Jersey high schools about his experience.
Funeral Service will take place on Friday, May 6th at Temple Beth Shalom, Livingston, NJ. Graveside Service will take place after the Funeral Service at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Gill Lane, Iselin, NJ.
Minyan will take place at the home of Barbara & Jan Butensky, 9936 Blakeford Mill Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32256 on Sunday evening, May 8th, Monday evening, May 9th, and Tuesday evening, May 10th at 6:30 PM.
