Eddie, to his family and friends, had a variety of occupations during his lifetime. After getting out of the navy, he was a security guard until his daughter Sheryl was born. He then worked at JEA as a welder for over 10 years. Eddie then tried his hand at truck driving long hauls. This took him all over the U.S, and he enjoyed telling stories of seeing the cross country sites. After being a passenger in a rig accident that left him with a shoulder injury, he became a grounds keeper at Episcopal high school until retirement age.
After retirement, Eddie settled closer to his mother, Mrs. Aleve Fugate, in Interlachen, Florida. He enjoyed the solitude and spent his last days clearing land, which was his passion, fishing with his neighbors and family on his bass boat which he was very proud of, and finally loving and caring for his animals. His dog Princess was his companion for years, and after grieving her death, sought another dog, who he named Sasha. Both these dogs were like his kids, and were spoiled enough to get a scoop of vanilla ice cream every night before bed. Even going so far as to getting Sasha a playmate. This kitten was named Lucky; and even though Ed was not a cat person, he loved watching the antics these two got into. He frequently sent his daughter videos of the animals playing incessantly.
Ed is survived by his younger brother Miles Fugate. Eddie also had two children. His daughter Sheryl J Spencer, her husband Randall Spencer, who combined made 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Ed also had a son, Joseph Edward Fugate and his wife Sharon, who together made 7 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Eddie also had a small, tight-knit group of friends in Interlachen. First, his neighbor Angel Perez and his wife Rosa were like extended family. Ed always let his daughter know the kindness they showed him. Whether it was bringing over holiday meals, or picking him up from various appointments, to taking care of him while ill, and finally helping the family attend to affairs of his home. Ed was grateful for their friendship and care.
His two other friends Mr. Gene Gray and Mark Brookshire were his daily comrades. They kept him as socially active as allowed from a man who enjoyed his privacy and solitude. Aside from these mentioned people, was his other friend from 50 years ago Mrs. Ronda Ritter. Their friendship was of great value to Eddie, and helped him feel connected to his roots in Jacksonville, Florida.
Herman Edward Fugate was stubborn to the core, a tad crotchety, and curt to say the least, but he will be missed.
