Hobart is survived by his loving family: son, Hobart H. Joost, III (Vanessa), sisters, Helen Joost O’Neal (Michael) and Catherine Teynac Joost, brothers, William H. Joost, Sr. (Lisa), Thomas E. Joost (Barbara), and Stephen C. Joost, Sr., and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Hobart graduated from Bishop Kenny High School in 1967. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1971.
In the next few intervening years, Hobart surfed in Puerto Rico, met Walter Dickinson and became his hotel manager at the beach. He then got into real estate when his Dad asked him for his help in turning around some real estate deals that had turned sour in Lakeland, which he successfully did. In 1975, Hobart started working in Walter Dickinson’s Real Estate business. Together with some other key people they built Walter Dickinson Realty into a juggernaut, eventually merging into Colliers International. Hobart was a Principal and Senior Vice President, Executive Committee Member, and Director of Industrial Services at Colliers. His awards are too many to list but highlights include CoStar Power Broker 2004-2009, NAIOP Land Sale of the Year 2008 & 2012, NAIOP Land Broker of the Year 1998, NAIOP Industrial Broker of the Year 1998, 1999, 2001, NEFAR Humanitarian Award 2005, NEFAR President’s Award for Outstanding Commitment 2000. Additionally, he served on NAIOP’s Board and eventually served as President all culminating in the NAIOP Life Time Achievement Award in 2021.
Hobart’s civic activities included the Southside Rotary Club where he served from 1988 to 2022. He was a 5-time Paul Harris Fellow, Club President 2003-2004, and a Rotary Benefactor. Hobart also served on the Board of the Salvation Army for nearly 20 years. He was chairman of the Property Committee and served on the Christmas Committee, which included finding empty warehouse space for the Annual Christmas Toy Drive and he rang the Red Kettle Bell for countless years. Hobart was awarded the Salvation Army Emeritus Board Membership in 2023.
Hobart LOVED fishing! He won the local King Fish Tournament multiple times as an angler, Captain and boat owner. He won the Sail Fish Tournament multiple times in Ft. Pierce with Steve Proctor. Every local fisherman knows the O.B-1. Hobart was listed as a top 10 angler on the East Coast multiple times. He enjoyed spear diving for fish but what he enjoyed most of all was his annual trip to the Bahamas catching lobster with Mike Holtsinger and friends.
Lastly and most importantly, Hobart loved his family. He hosted countless Thanksgivings. All were great, a few were epic!
Thank you to the Fleet Landing staff who looked after Hobart and treated him as their family.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 am on July 20, 2026, at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 523 Pablo Ave, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250.
