Back in 1947 a municipal judge called him "speedy" and the name stuck. Over the years, "Speedy" also built engines for such drivers as "Fireball" Roberts, Marvin Panch, Tiny Lund and LeeRoy Yarbrough who won the Daytona 500 in 1969. Speedy has also built motors for several local dirt track champions in Jacksonville.
"Speedy" and his wife Betty have been married for 59 years, and is survived by his son, Ed, and brother James "Jimmy" Spiers.
A visitation will be held at in Taylor Hall at Hardage Giddens Oaklawn Chapel 4801 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, Florida 32207 on Thursday August 22 from 10:00am - 11:00am. This will be followed by a funeral service at 11:00am; interment in Oaklawn Cemetery following the service and a reception in The Lodge at Oaklawn at 12:30pm.
