He was born in Tampa, Florida on December 16th, 1943 to William Chester Hurley and Oneita Flagler Hurley, and was adopted at age two by Clarence ("Mank") Camp and Louise Bryant Camp. Growing up in what was, at that time, still rural Ocala, Florida, Jack learned a rugged confidence from hunting, riding horses, and working on the family ranch as well as an acute moral sensibility from his much beloved, adopted mother, known as Weezie. He experienced loss early in life, after Weezie died suddenly of an aneurysm at a skeet shooting tournament in Jacksonville when Jack was fourteen, and he carried her memory and lessons with him as a guiding beacon throughout his life.
Jack graduated from Ocala High School and then the University of Florida, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity. There, he met Suzanne Achee, who would become his wife and the focus of his love and admiration for the next 60 years. After initially living in Alabama, where Jack worked for Southern Cement Company as Safety Director, they settled before long in Jacksonville, FL, where together they raised two sons.
He had a wide range of interests — among them literature, history, finance, and boating on the St. John's River though no other joy for him matched that of his family. He was a caring and loving husband, a devoted father to his grateful and admiring sons, and a proud and present and much-loved grandfather, affectionately called "Beast".
Jack is survived by his wife, Suzanne, and their sons, Craig (Allison) and Gray (Elle); his grandchildren, Caroline, Will, Cele, Jack, Henry, and Teddy; his step-granddaughter Dylan (Chandler) and step-great-granddaughter Neely; his brother, Gene (Trish), and sister, Gay; his brother-in-law Gray (Suzy); his cousin Cecilia (Richard); and many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, and the friends whose lives he touched.
There will be a private family Mass in memorial.
