

Jacob Pinkney Schrum, (Jake), 89, passed away February 16th 2020 at Baptist Medical Center South in Jacksonville, Florida. He is survived by his son, Dr. Jacob Dale Schrum; daughter in law, Dr. Stefanie Schrum; grandchildren and their spouses, Chris and Becca Schrum, Michael and Becca Schrum, and Tyler and Sarah Wathen and their infant son, Jacob. He is predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Gloria Price Schrum and their daughter Eva Anna who died at birth. He is also predeceased by his mother, Mary Pinkney Schrum and his father, Marvin Howard Schrum of Dallas, North Carolina. Jake served as a Staff Sergeant in the Korean War from 1949 to 1953. He received three bronze stars for meritorious service in active combat. Upon returning home he graduated from Dallas High School. He went on to receive his undergraduate degree from Belmont Abbey and a Master’s in Education from Appalachian State University. He and his wife, Gloria were married on August 24, 1957 and lived in Gastonia, North Carolina where they raised their son Dale Schrum. Jake served as an elementary school principal in the Gaston County public school system for over 20 years. Jake was an ordained Deacon in the Southern Baptist Church and was an active member of Fruit Cove Baptist Church for his senior years. Jake enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid gardener. He was a gregarious man who made friends easily and often. He and his wife Gloria moved to Jacksonville, FL in 1992 to be near Dale and Stefanie and help care for their grandchildren. He lived to see all three of his grandchildren happily married and the birth of his great-grandson, Jacob, who bears his name. The only thing Jake loved more that his family was his Father in Heaven. He gave his life to Jesus Christ at 19 years of age and did his best to live a life honoring to his Savior until his final breath. In his final months he would often speak of the joy awaiting him in the presence of God. He will be dearly missed but his family and friends are glad he his home.
Visitation will be held Thursday evening, February 20 from 6-8 pm at the Hardage -Giddens Funeral Home in South Mandarin, 11801 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32223. His funeral service will be Friday February 21 at 10:00 am at the Hardage Giddens Funeral Home with Interment to follow at Jacksonville Memory Gardens, 111 Blanding Blvd., Orange Park, FL 32073. All family and friends are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The City Rescue Mission, 426 S. McDuff Ave. Jacksonville, FL 32254.
