James Robert “Jim” Applegate, 94 passed away peacefully on March 22, 2018 at Community Hospice Acosta-Rua Center in Jacksonville, FL. Born December 23, 1927 in Macomb, IL to Nelle & Clyde Applegate. Jim graduated from High School driving a 1930 Ford Model-A Roadster, in Moline, IL in 1944. He joined the U.S. Army where he bravely served his country on the frontlines in Germany. After an injury he was honorably discharged as a Disabled Veteran. He lived a wonderful life as a successful 3M “scotch tape & post-it note” salesperson. He retired after forty years.
“Papa” was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He truly loved life and people. He was a member of the Arlington Congregational Church for over fifty-five years. His hobbies were cars and traveling. His happiest times were spent with his grandchildren & great-grandchildren. He will truly be missed by all that knew him. He was married to Mary Applegate for 69 years who preceded him in death in 2015, also preceding him in death was his daughter Jill Applegate in 2017. He is survived in death by his daughters Kathy Cogburn (Ron), Jennifer Applegate; grandchildren Julie Shimp (Will) & Brian Johnson; great-grandchildren Macie & Katie Shimp. “Papa” will be laid to rest at Greenlawn Cemetery beside his wife and daughter.
