Affectionately known as Jimmy, his imprint was felt far and wide. His wit, always on tap, was one of his many hallmarks. He had a deep love for Jacksonville, where he was born, and was proud of his family’s role in the development of the city. As a Florida native, Jimmy had a reverence and respect for the state’s rivers, springs, and the Everglades. He often spoke of the “Old Florida” where he grew up, grateful to have experienced it when the state was less developed.
Jimmy was equipped with legendary common sense and abilities that propelled him during difficult times as well as the good. Much the survivor, sharply honed by life experiences, his sage advice and wisdom were freely shared with friends and family without the expectation of anything in return. He was generous and loving.
Jimmy was a philanthropist. His interests were varied and included Jacksonville Public Broadcasting (Jax PBS), the Jacksonville Humane Society, and the University of Florida’s 4-H Youth Development Program. Jimmy’s philanthropy wasn’t limited to the public sector. Much of his giving was quietly orchestrated, touching the lives of many friends who needed financial help. He recognized needs and acted accordingly without being asked. His actions were invariably rooted in compassion.
Collecting antique cars and fine art were among Jimmy’s passions. He meticulously maintained his prized “fleet” of cars in the “garage mahal.” The structure was built specifically for the purpose of housing the cars while providing upstairs living quarters for visiting guests.
Travel was no stranger to Jimmy and his sister, having visited many places in the United States and Europe, as well as more exotic locations in Asia and South America.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his father, James R. Boyd Jr., and his mother, Benita Sinclair Boyd. He is survived by his sister, Benita Sinclair Boyd, who was named after her mother, several cousins, and a host of friends.
Benita wishes to thank their dear friend, Barbara Buck, for her gift of tireless and selfless care and devotion to Jimmy and to herself. Additional thanks are extended to Tammy Hansen, who exhibited patience and love while rendering stalwart care throughout this journey. Much gratitude is extended to Ngor Adub and the other kind caregivers from American In-Home Care for their compassion and professionalism.
Graveside services will be held at Oaklawn Cemetery on Friday, June 19, 2026, at 11 a.m. In memory of Jimmy and in keeping with his preference for casual attire, please wear your favorite Hawaiian or similarly styled shirt or blouse.
