James "Jim" Rush

James was born in Baxley, GA to Virgil Morgan and Welda S. Rush. At nine years old, his mother remarried and he and his two brothers were adopted by their stepfather Denton O. Rush. He was raised in Jacksonville, FL where he attended elementary and junior high. His family moved to Fernandina Beach, FL and he graduated from Fernandina Beach High School. James followed his family to San Diego, CA and attended San Diego State for a couple of years. Upon his family’s return to the south, he transferred to and graduated with a BA in Art Education from Florida State University.

James went to work for the Duval County School Board in 1965. He taught art at Ribault Junior High School, Terry Parker High School, and Sandalwood Junior/Senior High School. After Sandalwood, James received his master degree in Administration from the University of North Florida. He then became the assistant principal at Paxon Senior High School. In his final years before retirement, he went to work for the district as an administrator with Community Schools and the Extended Day Programs. James retired after thirty-eight years of dedicated service.

James loved making pottery over the years and enjoyed gardening. He loved his family and always lent a helping hand when needed. James loved his trips to the mountains of North Carolina, that was his happy place. He was also a member of San Juan Del Rio in Switzerland, Fl.

James is predeceased by his father, mother, stepfather, and his brother Don. He is survived by his wife of 51 years Carol S. Rush, son Joel B. Rush, his brother Larry (Ann), sister Cynthia Mercer (Edward) and his aunt Linda Altman. He is also survived by many nephews, nieces, and cousins.

The family would like to thank the staff of Community Hospice at Baptist South. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Alzheimer’s Association or The American Cancer Society.

The service will be held at Hardage-Giddens in Mandarin, FL on Saturday, May 11, 2024 at 11am with a visitation beginning at 10am and going until service time.
