Jane Champion McRae Scott died July 16, 2018. She was born in Jacksonville on April 3, 1927, the youngest child of Jennie Cross McRae and Walter Alexander McRae. She attended West Riverside Elementary, John Gorrie and Robert E. Lee High School. As a child, she rode horses in the Ortega area and through the woods now known as Ortega Forest with her friend Peggy Farnell. She attended Ogontz Junior College in Abington, Pennsylvania (now part of Penn State University) where she was president of her class, graduating in 1946. While in high school she met Lt. Jack Lee Scott of Carson City, Nevada, at a dance at the Naval Air Station Jacksonville where he was in flight training. He would regularly buzz her parents' home in his PBY (his amphibious rescue plane). Following his World War II tour of duty in the South Pacific theatre, they were married on June 18, 1946, and moved to Gainesville where they attended the University of Florida. After his graduation they moved back to Jacksonville where Jack joined her family's automotive firm, Duval Motor Company.
Jane was an active volunteer throughout her life. She served on the altar guild at St. Mark's Episcopal Church for many years. She was a Girl Scout leader for Troop 68 at St. Mark's. While volunteering at Ortega School at a Halloween carnival she and her friend Marilyn Pruitt overloaded the cotton candy machine and the front lawn was engulfed in pink cotton candy. She was a founding member of the Women's Board of Wolfson Children's Hospital. She served on the boards of Florida House and the American Cancer Society. She was a docent at The Cummer Museum. She was a member of MMWGG (Mrs. Mann's Wednesday Golf Group) and enjoyed many adventures with the Acacia Garden Circle.
Jane was predeceased by her husband, Jack, her brother, Walter McRae, Jr., her sister, Josephine Bozard, and her grandson, Scott Shad.
She is survived by her three daughters, Jennie Shad (Mike), Mary Jane Trimble (Jay) and Sarah Josephine Scott; Mommy Jane is also survived by her grandchildren, Bill Shad (Piper), Jack Shad (Lori), Jennie Busey (Brooks), James Trimble (Amanda) and Sarah Jo Luby (Kyle); and her greatgrandchildren, Scott and McRae Busey, Michael and Jane Shad, Harper Shad, and JJ and Gideon Trimble.
A graveside service will be held at Oaklawn Cemetery on Thursday, July 19, at 10:00AM. The family will receive friends at her home Wednesday evening. At noon on July 19, following the service, the family welcomes friends to the home of Mary Jane and Jay Trimble. Jane's daughters wish to thank her kind and generous caregivers who not only took care of our mother but also the three of us in the last few weeks: Velecia "Peaches" Bellamy, Cherie Dixon, Penny Mote, Elizabeth Santana, and Carrie Jones, and the Community Hospice team. We would also like to thank Cindy Ward for her guidance, and Lynn Peterson, Ethel Thompson, Travis Eisenhauer, Pat Shepherd and Rebecca Williams for their care and kindness through the years.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, The Salvation Army-Jacksonville Child Development Center, St Vincent's Medical Center Good Samaritan Fund in memory of Jane's friend, Jessie Norwood, or a charity of your choice.
