Jim was born to Mabel Louise Pearcy and Joseph Henry Spears on April 3rd, 1943, in Liberal, KS. After graduating from Weir High School, he joined the US Navy for four years before transferring to the Coast Guard. He spent the next 26 years serving our country as a chief radioman, and during that time, met his wife, Linda Sue Spears. He enjoyed bowling with his wife and playing golf in his earlier years, and vacationing with his family, watching golf and football in his later years.
