He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Zenaida Laviña; son, Jay Laviña (Erica); daughter, Jenna Boyhan (Robbie); sons, Eric Laviña (Aimee) and Allen Laviña (Marie). He was also a proud grandfather to Reagan, Brennan and Maren Laviña and Jacob and William Boyhan. He is also survived by 2 brothers and 2 sisters in the Philippines as well as many family and friends.
Dr. Laviña was born in the Philippines. He completed medical school at University of Santo Thomas prior to moving to New Jersey and eventually settling in Jacksonville. He worked as a family practice physician and was a member of the faculty at the University of Florida, Jacksonville campus for thirty years. Dr. Laviña was well respected by his colleagues, loved by his patients and always produced smiles and chuckles amongst friends and family. Prior to an injury, he was an avid tennis player, biker and swimmer and was a frequent visitor at the YMCA. Dr. Laviña was a devout Catholic. He was the consummate people person, always putting others’ needs before his own. He loved learning about people and started genuine conversations with all those he encountered, leaving people with a smile as big as his.
The Visitation will be at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel on Monday, December 17, 2018 from 5:00-7:00pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Jacksonville, FL on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at 10:00am with Father Blair Gaynes as Celebrant. In lieu of flowers, please continue daily acts of kindness and give to a charity of your choice.
