

HANEY John C. Haney, Jr. ,87, passed away on Wednesday June 4, 2014 in Jacksonville. Chaplain Haney was born on February 5, 1927 in Philadelphia, PA to John Clifford Haney, Sr. and Mable Dessie Skelton Haney. He earned a B.A. from Baldwin Wallace University in Ohio, a M.A. from Webster University and his Theology Degree from Boston University, Boston,MA. Served over 30 years as a Naval Chaplain in several locations including Gitmo, Cuba, Camp Lejeune,NC, Newport, RI, Mayport, FL, Cecil Field, FL, Okinawa, Japan, and on board the USS Forrestal, USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA 42) and Senior Chaplain at several stations. Chaplain Haney attained the rank of Captain before retiring in 1988. Chaplain Haney also volunteered for over 25 years for the NROTC at Jacksonville University. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 59 ½ years, his mother, father and 3 older sisters.Survivors include his daughter and caregiver for the past 4 years, Deborah A. Weida; and a son John S. Haney; 6 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and numerous friends from his travels and stations around the world.A memorial service will be held on August 14, 2014 at 11 AM at Arlington United Methodist Church, 1400 University Blvd. N., Jacksonville, FL. 32211. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials in Chaplain Haney’s name to the Children’s Camp Fund and/or Memorial Fund c/o Arlington United Methodist Church. Chaplain Haney has requested he be buried at sea with Navy Honors.
