He is survived by Sylvia, his loving and devoted wife of 62 years. John and Sylvia were married in St. James’ Church, London, England on December 3, 1955. He is lovingly remembered by his son Clifford and daughter, Susan Skinner (Rusty), his two grandchildren, Ian Skinner and Bridget Scrogham (Michael), and great grandson, Owen.
John was born in Burnt Oak, Middlesex, England on July 24, 1931. In 1949, he enlisted in the Royal Air Force as a mechanic. He subsequently attended Smithfield College and worked as a buyer for Sir Ambrose Keevil in Smithfield Market. In 1955, John joined the Bedfordshire Police where he proudly served as a Police Constable for 25 years. During his tenure with the force, he was a motorcycle officer, senior driving instructor and also served as police escort for the Queen and Royal Family. Upon retirement from police service, John worked for Middle Fen and Mere Internal Drainage Board in Prickwillow, Ely, Cambridgeshire. In 1984, John and Sylvia immigrated to Jacksonville, Florida where he worked for Allied Bendix Aerospace and the Department of Children and Families.
An avid cyclist, John rode in cycling events throughout England, including the Tour of Britain. He and Sylvia enjoyed riding motorcycles. He was a keen fisherman, and enjoyed sailing, woodworking and was a master at building and fixing things.
John will be sorely missed, but his work ethic, kindness, and moral compass will guide everyone who knew him for years to come.
