John F. McKeown, Jr.
October 4, 2026
With heavy hearts and profound sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of John F. McKeown, Jr., who departed this life on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at 5:57 a.m. in Jacksonville, Florida.
John lived a life defined by faith, family, service, and an unwavering commitment to others.
A graduate of Archbishop Curley High School in Baltimore, Maryland, John was drafted into the United States Army shortly after graduation, answering his nation’s call to service. Following his military service, John continued his dedication to serving others by joining the Baltimore City Fire Department. His firefighting career began at Engine Company 7, marking the beginning of a distinguished career in the fire service.
While serving as a Baltimore City firefighter, John’s commitment to his country continued through additional periods of military service with both the United States Coast Guard Reserve and the Maryland Air National Guard. His service across three branches of the United States Armed Forces reflected his enduring sense of duty, patriotism, and dedication to something greater than himself.
Throughout his years in the fire service, John demonstrated commitment, courage, and leadership, ultimately retiring in 1993 as a Lieutenant assigned to Truck Company 3.
Following his retirement from the fire department, John relocated with his family to Florida, eventually settling in the Jacksonville area. Never one to remain idle, he embarked on a second career in the mortgage banking industry, bringing with him the same dedication, integrity, and work ethic that had defined his years in public service.
John’s Catholic faith remained an important part of his life. For many years, he was a devoted staff member of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine, where his commitment to the Church and its community became another meaningful chapter in his lifetime of service.
Above all, John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. His greatest legacy lives on through the family he loved and the countless lives he touched throughout his years.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Betty and John F. McKeown, Sr.; his brother, Dennis McKeown; and his beloved wife of 41 years, Lynn McKeown.
He is survived by his loving children, Regina (Kelly) Vought, Chris (Brandy) McKeown, and Tami (Greg) Bauer; his cherished grandchildren, Molly, Chloe, Sienna, Mackenzie, and James; and his niece and nephew, Erin (Aaron) Taylor and DJ McKeown.
John is also survived by his former wife, Deborah Kierstead, mother of Regina and Chris, with whom he shared an important chapter of his life and the lasting bond of family.
John will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his service to his country and community, and the enduring impact he made on those fortunate enough to know him.
A Catholic Funeral Mass will be celebrated in John’s honor as family and friends gather to remember his life, celebrate his legacy, and commend his soul to God’s eternal care.
