John Edward “Teenie” Phelan, 75, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, June 20, 2025. He was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, where he attended St. Matthew’s Catholic School and Bishop Kenny High School. He graduated from Florida Atlantic University and was retired from the State of Florida Department of Regulations. He was predeceased by his parents, Dr. William J. and Helen L. “Weezie” Sourbier Phelan. Eleven siblings survive John: Bill (Pat), Patty Higgins (Bob), Mike (Paula), Tom (Cindy), Katy, Louise Smith (George), Michele Tucker (Wayne), Colleen, Kathleen, Kevin, and Pauline Brown (Larry), and his stepmother, Mary Alice Barrett Phelan. John was passionate about family; he cherished his roles as a devoted brother and as the ‘favorite’ uncle to twenty-four nieces and nephews, and twenty-two grand-nieces and nephews. He leaves a host of good friends, especially the classmates and spouses of the Bishop Kenny Class of 1968 with whom he shared a close bond, and he enthusiastically attended their alumni events. His infectious smile and warm laugh will be missed by all who knew him. A funeral mass will be held at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church at 11 a.m. on August 8th, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Foundation (www.pmsf.org).
