

John Boykin Thompson, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2023, at the age of 89. He was born on July 18, 1933 in Miami, Florida to Robert L Thompson and Helen Smythe Thompson. John was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Howard Ryland Thompson.
John graduated from Coral Gables High School and then the University of Miami where he was a member of the track team. He served in the United States Navy. His time in the Navy instilled in him a sense of discipline and patriotism that would shape the rest of his life. Following his time in the Navy, John pursued a career in surveying and later in sales.
On August 22, 1964, John married the love of his life, Barbara Thompson. Barbara stood by John’s side throughout their journey, providing unwavering support and love. Equally, John supported Barbara in her business, Barbara Thompson School of Dance as a stage dad, handyman and set designer. They were both members of Riverside Baptist Church and have been long time members of Aspire Church San Marco (formerly Southside Baptist Church).
John was a dedicated and loving father to his children, Paige Thompson, Amanda Thompson-Ranson (Karl), and Ryland Thompson (Kelly). John’s wisdom, guidance, and unconditional love shaped their lives in profound ways.
John’s greatest joy came from being a grandfather to his beloved grandchildren, Aiym, Beck, Brooklynn, Bryce, Brynn, Cole, and nieces and nephews. He adored spending time with them, imparting his wisdom, and creating lasting memories. John also had a special place in his heart for his sister-in-law, Jean Byrd Allen (Chuck) and his brother-in-law, Buddy Poppell (Jane).
A memorial service to celebrate John’s life will be held at Aspire Church of San Marco, Saturday May 27, 2023 at 1pm. 1435 Atlantic Blvd, Jacksonville, Florida 32207. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Community Hospice and Aspire Church San Marco.
