

Joseph Leamon (Lee) Chancey, Jr. passed away peacefully surrounded by family after a hard fight with cancer on July 5, 2021 at age 66. He was born at Riverside Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida on November 2, 1954 to Joseph Sr. and Mary Chancey. Lee was married to Janice Chancey for forty years before her passing this January. He grew up in the San Jose neighborhood of Jacksonville near San Jose Episcopal (formerly Grace Chapel). He and his family were members of Grace Chapel and attended school and graduated from Wolfson High School in 1973. Lee studied at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville before working with his father, Joseph Sr. at Chancey Trailers.
Lee founded Chancey Metal Products, Inc. on Sunbeam Road over thirty five years ago. Growing the company from several employees to a thriving business of over one hundred. The company manufactured steel and aluminum handrail, stairs, fences and gates for residential and commercial real estate. The company’s success was a reflection of Lee’s hard work; and the loyalty of many colleagues (that included family) extremely dedicated.
Lee was a generous benefactor of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and an active member of San Jose Country Club since 1981. He was an avid offshore fisherman and enjoyed time on his boat, Stair Crazy II. One of Lee’s favorite things to do was have friends and family over for fried fish that he caught, a recipe he perfected over the years. He was instilled from a young age the virtues of hard work, honesty and perseverance by his father and mother. It was important for him to pass those attributes along to his sons, Joey and Michael.
Lee is preceded in death by his wife, Janice Wilhoite Chancey; son, Michael Alan Chancey and his father Joseph L. Chancey, Sr..
He is survived by his son Joseph (Joey) Chancey, III; his mother Mary Chancey; his sisters Carol Chancey and Barbara Bohn (John). He leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and beloved friends.
Visitation will be at 10AM on Saturday, July 10, 2021; immediately followed by a service at 11AM at the Lodge at Oaklawn Cemetery, 4801 San Jose Blvd, Mother Susan Claytor will officiate. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Mandarin Food Bank in honor of Lee.
