Joyce Carroll was born in Jacksonville, Florida on December 27, 1927. She was the middle child of Thelma E. and Cyril J. Hoskinson.
Joyce came from a very loving family and as a young child was always remembered on her birthday even though it was two days after Christmas. She received a Brownie box camera on her 14th birthday and took many pictures of her family and friends. Her oldest living friend is Georgie. They began their friendship when they were in elementary school. They both attended Robert E. Lee High School.
Joyce married Patrick H. Carroll on March 31, 1945 when she was 17, and had her first child in June of 1946. She eventually had a total of four children who were the focus of her life. She didn’t work outside the home, but her job was that of a wife and mother at which she excelled. Her children were blessed to have her as their mother.
She and her husband built their home by hand in 1946 which is where she was residing prior to her death.
Joyce was a woman of many talents from crocheting, ceramics, cross stitch, crafts, doll houses/miniatures, sewing, cooking, etc. Ski and Melissa were always asking her to make her delicious chicken and rice. She was always there to help her children and grandchildren with any project. Joyce was never one to complain and tried to assist family and friends.
When her children were growing up, Joyce spent many weekends with her husband and family at Talbot Island. There was always fishing, swimming and having a fish fry at the beach afterwards.
After her children were grown, she became the best grandmother and great grandmother anyone could want. She was always there for them just as she was with her children.
Joyce had a variety of pets in her lifetime starting with her dog, Stormy. Others included Blackie, Pokey, Freebie, Hershey and Sassy. She also rescued flying squirrels after the 2004 hurricanes (Frances, Jean and Ivan) and a grey squirrel (Butter).
Joyce crocheted the most beautiful bedspreads and tablecloths and won many blue ribbons at the Jacksonville Fair. She loved playing cards and bingo, especially with her friend Thelma. She also loved playing the “slots”. One of her favorite things was to go to garage sales with her daughters and granddaughter. Joyce also like to collect most anything including antique kitchen utensils, birdhouses, etc.
