

The McCarthy’s, Martha and Tim Martha Bullard McCarthy, 80, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2010, after a lengthy battle against heart disease. Timothy F. McCarthy, Sr., 82, passed away on February 13, 2010 after a hard fought battle against Parkinson’s Disease. Martha was born on April 7, 1929, daughter of the late Fred Bascom and Rosaline (Smith) Bullard. Tim was born in Jacksonville on April 12, 1927, son of the late John Joseph and Catherine (Berry) McCarthy, who immigrated from Ireland when they were children.Martha and Tim met at her brother Burton’s wedding to Tim’s cousin, Jean and married on February 23, 1952. They would have celebrated their 58th anniversary this year.Martha graduated from Baldwin High School and worked at the Duval County Clerk of Courts. Outgoing and athletic, Martha played basketball on the 1946 Jacksonville Naval Air Station team; their team photo hangs in Zaxby’s on Roosevelt Blvd. Martha enjoyed bowling and golf and volunteered at the Doral Open and the Greater Jacksonville Open. She was a member of the Empire Point Garden Circle.Tim, an Eagle Scout, graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy and joined the Marines in 1944. He fought with the Sixth Division, Reinforced, in Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands and China, and was awarded a Purple Heart and the Presidential Unit Citation "for extraordinary heroism in action...in the capture of Okinawa". Tim attended Spring Hill College and graduated from the University of Florida. Tim worked for Southern Bell from 1951 until 1986 and was an avid volunteer with the Telephone Pioneers of America, the Knights of Columbus and the Empire Point Community Council. Tim also enjoyed golf and loved woodworking, making beautiful furniture for his wife, children and grandchildren.Martha and Tim are survived by their son, Timothy F. McCarthy, Jr. (Letha) of Tallahassee, daughter, Joan E. McCarthy of Ponte Vedra Beach, grandchildren, Ryan McCarthy and Erin (Karl) Loewe and great grand children, Quinn and Ava. Martha is also survived by a brother, Raymond L. Bullard (Cleia) and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding her in death were brothers Fred Bascom Bullard Jr., Frank M. Bullard, J. Burton Bullard, Carl E. Bullard and a sister, Nadine Bullard Roundtree. Tim is also survived by many nieces and nephews and was preceded in death by his brother, John J. McCarthy.Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 16, from 6 – 8 pm with a vigil service at 7:00 pm at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 4115 Hendricks Ave., Jacksonville, FL. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Assumption Catholic Church on Wednesday, February 17 at 2:00 pm. Burial will be in St. Mary’s in Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in their names may be directed to Community Hospice of NE FL, the American Heart Association or the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
