With profound sadness, the family of Mary Jean Combes announces her passing on July 13, 2025, at the age of 74. A devoted wife, loving mother, adoring MeeMaw and Grannie, and treasured friend, Mary’s warmth, humor, and boundless love will be deeply missed.
Born in Ripley, Tennessee, on December 30, 1950, Mary was known for her vibrant personality, her passion for family, and her many creative hobbies. Whether she was playing card games, laughing over a round of Mexican Train, meticulously working on her diamond paintings, or adding to her cherished owl collection, Mary found joy in the little things and shared that joy freely with others.
Mary was the beloved wife of Duncan Combes, and together they created a loving home filled with laughter and loyalty. As a mother, she was a constant source of strength and guidance to her three children: Edward Combes, Leslie Whitehead, and Frances Burpo. Her love multiplied with her grandchildren—eight in total—and further with her six great-grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in her heart. They knew her lovingly as MeeMaw or Grannie, names she wore with pride.
She is also survived by her sisters, Carolyn Turney, Peggy Thompson, and Judy Midkiff, as well as her brother, Royce Lynn Sherrod, along with numerous nieces and nephews who will fondly remember her playful spirit and listening ear.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and other dear loved ones who now welcome her into eternal peace.
A memorial service will be held at a later date, allowing family and friends the opportunity to come together to celebrate her life and legacy.
Though our hearts ache, we are comforted by the love she gave so freely and the lasting memories she leaves behind. Her laughter, her stories, and her steadfast devotion to family will live on in all who knew her.
