The inimitable Mary Jane (MJ) Walker passed away peacefully February 18, 2021 in Jacksonville, Florida. To say she was one of a kind doesn’t begin to describe the woman with a smile and wit that lit up countless people’s lives during her stay on earth: should a gathering lack sparkle, her entrance into its sphere was the perfect antidote.
MJ studied secretarial work at Bartram Girls School, was hired and employed by the Department of Maritime Safety, continuing her service as it became the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for 40+ years, then moving to the State of Florida, Child Services to work another five.
Tall, lean and a fashion plate her entire life, her outward appearance drew admiring glances from all she encountered; of greater consequence is that beneath her beguiling exterior existed a strong faith, serious work ethic and genuine delight in the company of people, be they new or lifelong,
She was a dedicated parishioner of Prince of Peace Catholic Church, holding a special admiration and love for its spiritual leader, Father Michael Larkin, and bringing her lifelong BFF (Best Friend Forever) Millie Lucas into its fold. MJ and Millie together transformed many the “ordinary” event into a party.
The originator of the “Grab Basket," MJ kept a large selection of small beautifully wrapped gifts for visitors. ”Take another,” she would command to a person who took only one. “Take several!”
MJ’s life was full, brimming with compassion for others and appreciation of each moment; speaking of a hair appointment to a friend, she once quipped, “I’ll be a brand-new dolly.” The phrase reflected her view of each new day to which she awoke.
The Earth will be a less interesting place without her.
