Mary Groover Whitson

She graduated from Robert E. Lee High School, in Jacksonville, Florida. After graduation she worked for Internal Revenue Service. She married (Bill) Bernard MacDonald Whitson March 28,1947. She accompanied her husband throughout his US Navy career and they returned to Jacksonville to live when he retired. Mary said she was Proud to be a Navy wife and being one gave her opportunity of places and experiences. When Mary came back to Jacksonville she had numerous jobs with Civil Service and retired after 32 years of Federal Service. She held several positions in the CPO Wives Club, including president. She was also a member of Toastmistresses and held several offices, including president. She enjoyed traveling, fishing, swimming and camping with her family and husband. She loved her home and was an avid gardener and shopper.

Mary is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years Bill Whitson. Also her brother Woodrow Groover, half-brother RM Groover and half-sister Carolyn Mansfield.

Mary is survived by daughters Yvonne (Ronald) James, Tina (James) Jordan and Sandra Whitson. Also survived by half-sisters Nancy Anderson and Patricia Brown and many nieces and nephews.

Mary and her husband Bernard Whitson (Bill) will be placed together at Jacksonville National Cemetery on August 16, 2023 at 11:00am, 4083 Lannie Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32218.
