Mattie Lee Brown, age 108, went home to be with the Lord on October 13, 2021. She was born March 10, 1913 to the late Ada Booker and Willie Woods in Evergreen, Alabama. She was educated through the Conecuh County School System. At the tender age of 15 she became a devout member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church in which she remained true to her faith in GOD. She married John Crosby and together they would have a family of five children. As her children grew, she accepted a position as a domestic engineer, which would become her primary profession. During later years, John would pass. Mattie continued to have the pleasure to work with many military families over a period of 40 years. Mattie met and married World War I Army Veteran, Walter Brown, in 1954, whom she cared for before his death in 1979. Mattie's strong sense of family values led her to be held as the family Matriarch. She also cared for her son, Curtis Crosby, over 50 years of his life, prior to his death in February 2020.
Mattie enjoyed many trips with her granddaughter, Candice, in which they would frequently attend mega church conferences and concerts. After her 100th birthday, Mattie would become unable to travel, however, continued to enjoy listening and watching her favorite gospel performers, working puzzles, looking at game shows and attending church services when able. Mattie kindly shared her wisdom by always saying "do unto others as you would have them do unto you".
Mattie is preceded in death by her daughter, Mary L. Penny and son, Curtis Crosby; her three sisters, Myra Boykins, Esther Bonner and Mamie Lucas.
Mattie leaves to cherish her daughters, Ada Wilson (Holt, Michigan), Doris Crosby (Jacksonville, Florida) and Martha Whiting (Pensacola, Florida), and fondly remembered by a generation of grandchildren/great grandchildren spanning six generations; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
