Maxie Charlene Ferren, known to all as Charlene, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2025, in Jacksonville, Florida, at the age of 87. Born on April 5, 1938, in Wartrace, Tennessee, though she always celebrated her birthday on May 5 as her mother always told her they got her birthday wrong at the county office in Tennessee. Charlene lived a full and accomplished life marked by resilience, leadership, and deep devotion to her family and community.
Charlene was a woman of remarkable versatility and determination. Over the years, she served her community in many capacities — as a nurse, a stock broker, and a real estate agent. Her commitment and passion for her work led her to become Vice President of Watson Real Estate and to serve as President of the Northeast Florida Association of Realtors (NEFAR) in 2002 — a role she held with pride and distinction.
Outside of her professional achievements, Charlene embraced life with joy and curiosity. She had a special love for cruising and cherished the many adventures she experienced at sea, often accompanied by family and friends. Whether exploring tropical destinations or simply enjoying the ocean breeze, cruising brought her great happiness and unforgettable memories.
Charlene was also a passionate sports fan and could often be found cheering for her favorite teams — the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Florida Gators. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed the camaraderie and challenge the game offered.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frank Ferren; her parents, Dorothy and Charles Spencer; her sister, Sandy Hartley; and her brother, Gary Spencer.
Charlene leaves behind a legacy of love and strength. She is survived by her three children, Diane Varner, Lori Hassett, and Stephen Perez; 11 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren — all of whom were a source of immense pride and joy in her life.
Charlene will be remembered for her sharp mind, vibrant spirit, and unwavering dedication to her family and career. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her.
Service will held at Jacksonville National Cemetery on Friday, June 27, 2025 at 1:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Friends of the Jacksonville Public Library or Haven Hospice, in honor of Charlene’s generous and compassionate spirit.
