Our dear mother, Maxine Barnett Horne, age 98 ½, was called home to heaven on August 13, 2025. She passed peacefully in her home where she had resided for 68 years, surrounded by her family and loving caregivers. We celebrate her life and legacy as a devoted and faithful follower of Christ and know that she is now rejoicing in heaven. She “fought the good fight, finished the race and kept the faith.” (2 Timothy 4:7)
Maxine was born in O’Brien, Florida on January 27,1927 to James L. and Jessie Mae Barnett. She was the youngest of nine children and was well loved by her 5 brothers and 3 sisters. She was predeceased by her husband of 71 years, Homa Judson (“HJ”) Horne, her son, James Keith Horne and nine siblings.
Maxine graduated from Branford HS in 1945 and was married in 1946. After raising her family, she pursued a college degree, graduating from UNF with a degree in Special Education in 1979. She taught in Duval County Public Schools for 10 years.
Maxine will be remembered for her vivacious and sunny personality. She spoke to everyone she met and never met a stranger. She demonstrated her Christian faith in everyday life, always willing to listen with concern for others over herself. Maxine faced the trials and heartaches of life with an unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. “The Joy of the Lord” was truly her strength.
Maxine excelled in her highest calling as a wife and mother. She made a warm and loving home where everyone was welcome. She was faithful to teach her children God’s word and to live out what she taught. Maxine was a woman of prayer and filled numerous prayer journals as she prayed for family and friends over many years.
Maxine is survived by daughters Yvonne Bradford (Allen), Nancy Cowart Klaameyer (Ed), and Connie Aplin (David); grandchildren Daniel Bradford (Sally), James Bradford (Maddy DuPuy), Lauren McAnany (Steven), Elizabeth Holman (Nick), Samuel Aplin (Aby), Hannah Aplin, and Will Aplin (Grace). She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The family invites you to a celebration of Maxine’s life on August 30, 2025, at Parkwood Baptist Church, 7900 Lone Star Rd., Jacksonville, Florida at 11 am, with a time of visitation from 10 – 11 am. There will be a lunch after the service, and then we will go in procession to Greenlawn Cemetery for her final resting place.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Parkwood Baptist Church or the Billy Graham Evangelist Association (BGEA).
