

Michael Joseph Mooney, age 83, went to be with his Heavenly Father on April 3, 2015 after a brief illness. He was raised in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania and spent his adult years in Jacksonville, Saint Augustine, and Vero Beach, Florida. He was greatly loved as a husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Frances Mooney; daughters, Deborah Hardage (David) and Lois Mooney; son, Michael Mooney. He is also survived by three grandchildren: Melissa Hardage, Courtney Hardage, and Forrest Hardage; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Mr. Mooney proudly served his country 20 years and retired from the United States Navy as Senior Chief Aviation Ordnanceman. He was a dedicated member and served in the benevolence ministry at the Vero Beach Church of Christ. He was known and loved for his kind and generous spirit, his wisdom, his love and devotion for his family, and his willingness to help anyone in need. He enjoyed the simple pleasures in life and always had a funny joke or story to tell. He was known to recommend a great restaurant or search for a new recipe for Fran to try. He enjoyed traveling, reading, and listening to jazz and blues music.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 -7:30 p.m. on Thursday evening at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 10, at the Hardage-Giddens Hendricks Chapel, 4115 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville with Bob Bole, Bob Burkert, and Tracy Moore officiating. Interment will follow in Chapel Hills Memory Gardens with military honors.
