Nellie Jo Wilson Luthin, 87, of Jacksonville, Florida, joined her loved ones in eternal life on February 28, 2023. Born in Conway, South Carolina, Nell was proud of her upbringing on “the farm” and enjoyed sharing stories about her adventures with cousins, especially co-piloting for cousin Holmes Archie Graham off the roof of the barn. Her grandmother Veta Belle Holmes Goodyear (affectionately named “Sweet Vete”) was her guiding light, and Nell modeled herself to be just like Sweet Vete, who taught her to lead a simple life and welcome everyone with kindness and love. She led others with a gracious and kind heart and a soothing voice used to encourage and comfort everyone.
She graduated from Robert E. Lee High School (Class of 1953) and worked at Prudential as a sickness and accident insurance underwriter. In March 1955, she met Richard Buckley Luthin, and they married in 1956. As a devoted Navy wife, she enjoyed entertaining in Monterey and Coronado, California, until Richard announced his desire to go to medical school at the University of Florida in 1964. After his graduation in 1968, they established the Luthin OBGYN practice in Jacksonville, where Nell was the Office Manager for over 30 years. Since 1969, they traveled extensively for months at a time and immersed themselves in the different European cultures.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 67 years, Richard B. Luthin, M.D.; daughter Bonnie Claire Luthin Miller; grandson Richard Luthin Miller (Peggy); granddaughter Claire Jeanell Miller Burns (Nick); great-grandson Henry Joseph Miller; great-granddaughter Laura Rosemary Miller; and a host of family and friends worldwide. She is predeceased by her parents Fred Greer Wilson and Claudia Goodyear Gentry; her sister Bonnie Faye Englehardt; her brother Lewis Edward Gentry; and her son-in-law Joseph Edwin Miller.
Due to her kind spirit and love of travel, Nell’s friendship and love extended beyond all borders. She deeply cared for everyone and showed her love with acts of kindness. “Lead a simple life, and you will be rewarded,” “I love you more than you will ever know” and “Thank you for all you do and all you will do” were her constant words of comfort and encouragement.
In lieu of flowers, please continue daily acts of kindness and give to a charity of your choice or take a loved one to lunch. The visitation with ongoing reception will be at the Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel on Thursday, March 9, 2023, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Jacksonville, Florida, on Friday, March 10, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. with the Reverend John Reynolds as Celebrant. The interment will follow at 12:30 p.m. at the Jacksonville National Cemetery. All are welcome. Arrangements by Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel, 4801 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville.
