Nelson Hurley, loving and devoted husband and father, passed on August 9, 2013 after a full and healthy life. Nelson was born April 11, 1918 in Wadesville, North Carolina, but spent his childhood in Jackson Springs, N. C., “the old home place”. He married his beloved wife, Eileen in 1943 and they settled in Jacksonville, Florida to raise their family. Nelson and Eileen were married for 62 years and Nelson is survived by his three daughters, Linda Edwards, Diane Hanson, Anita Stombock, and their families.
Nelson was a WWII veteran and served his country for 20 years both in the Army and Navy where he was critical to many dangerous missions and survived a crash at sea. After retiring from the Navy, he worked for the United States Postal Service and took early retirement to enjoy his family and travel. Above all, Nelson was admired for his total devotion to his wife Eileen throughout a 27 year long battle with Alzheimer’s. His, wit, musical abilities, sense of humor, knowledge and love of family will be missed by all who knew him. While we grieve the loss of our wonderful father, we are comforted to know he is reunited with his true love, Eileen, and his many brothers and sisters in Heaven, where peace resides in the hands of our God.
A funeral service and Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, 15 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 5752 Blanding Boulevard, Jacksonville, FL. Nelson will be laid to rest with full military honors, at Jacksonville Memory Gardens. A reception will follow at Sacred Heart Church Family Life Center. Arrangements are entrusted to HARDAGE-GIDDENS Funeral Home 5753 Blanding Blvd. Flowers are welcome as are contributions to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida at Hadlow Center for Caring, 4266 Sunbeam Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32257.
