

Nick Anthony Megas, 85, passed away on September 25, 2010 after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Georgia Pihos Megas, his children Stephanie Petty (Phil), Anthony (Michele) and grandson, Nicholas. Other survivors include his sister, Helen Yeatropoulos (James), brother in law, James Pihos and several nieces and nephews.
A native of Ashville, North Carolina, Nick came to Jacksonville as a child and graduated from Andrew Jackson high school in 1944. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1948 with a bachelor’s degree in business where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.
Nick worked for JEA for 32 years as a supervisor, retiring in 1983. He served on the Board of Directors of Jax Metro Credit Union in various roles, including Chairman of the Board.
The three most important things in Nick’s life were his Church, his family and the Florida Gators. And he’d be happy to tell you about any of them if you asked! He was a lifetime member of St. John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church, serving on the Parish Council for over 20 years in many roles. He was an active member of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA). Nick was also a founding member of both the St. Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine in St. Augustine and the Greek Studies Program at the University of Florida.
For his work at his Church and on behalf of the Greek Orthodox religion, he received the Medal of St. Paul from Archbishop Iakovos of the Greek Orthodox Church.
Nick was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Angeliki, sister Mary, and brother James.
A Trisagion will be held at St. John the Divine on Tuesday at 6:30. The funeral service will be at the church at 11 a.m. Wednesday, followed by burial at Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be donated to the Building Fund at St. John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church, 3850 Atlantic Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32207.
