TRAMMELL - Nira Sue Trammell passed away peacefully on April 30th, 2019, after a long battle with lung cancer. She left a tremendous legacy through her skillful storytelling, penchant for research, indomitable spirit, and selfless love.
A Jacksonville native born on September 10, 1933, Nira was the 7th child of John Trammell and Willie Kate Hill Trammell. She spent her youth roaming the woods at Camp Echockotee in Orange Park, climbing trees in old Ortega, and helping her parents establish a home in Jacksonville Beach. As a young woman she moved away from home, living in Texas, Tennessee, and Illinois before returning to Jacksonville in the 60’s. She was an artist, an author, and a vocalist in the days of live radio. A bookkeeper by trade, Nira was smart and independent and was a wonderful role model known for her integrity and strong work ethic. In her later years, Nira settled in the San Marco area and became a fixture who could frequently be seen riding her three-wheeled bicycle around town. She genuinely treasured the friendships made through Nira’s Front Porch Stories, a Facebook Group she created to share her passion for stories, writing and Jacksonville history. With the help of her niece, Lynne Raiser, a compilation of Nira’s stories will be available in book format through Amazon later this year.
Nira was a devoted mother who leaves behind her two children Ouida Doughty Kuhn and Gibbes Weston Doughty, and their spouses Kirk Kuhn and Chris Barry Doughty, in addition to 6 grandchildren (Rebekah Stanek, Katlyn Lueders, Kathryn Kuhn, Jacob Doughty, Mitchell Kuhn, and Benjamin Doughty), 6 great grandchildren (Charlie Sofield, Nora Lueders, Haven Stanek, Jackson Lueders, Jeremiah Lueders, and Charlotte Lueders), and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her family and friends will celebrate her life later this year, near her birthday in September.
