Norman Elias Hanania Sr.

Norman (Naim) Elias Hanania, 89, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2020. He was born on July 20, 1931, in Jerusalem, Palestine. He immigrated to the United States in 1952 to Birmingham, Alabama. Ten years later, he moved to Jacksonville, Florida where he became a successful, self- employed businessman. He is credited with opening the first Baskin Robbins ice cream store in Jacksonville. He was a faithful member of St. George Antiochian Church, where he served two terms as parish council president and led the usher ministry for decades. During his time in Alabama, he was a founding member of the Ramallah Club of Birmingham. He was also a member of the Ramallah American Club of Jacksonville where he served one term as president. Norman was a life member of the Albert J. Russell Lodge #126 F&AM and Scottish Rite Valley of Jacksonville and was also a member of the Morocco Temple of Jacksonville. Norman was a loving devoted patriarch of the Hanania family. He was a kind and generous man who never hesitated to help others. He made it his goal to make everyone he met feel special. He is preceded in death by his parents, Elias and Hilweh Hanania, and his sisters, Jameelah Hanna, Sarah Hanna, Nabeeha Mufarreh, Mary Khoury, and his brothers, Nabeeh Hanania, and Yacoub Hanania. He is survived by his children Dr. Sam Hanania (Donna), Norman Hanania Jr., Denise Hanania, and Sandy Barnes (Bob). He was devoted to his four grandchildren: Sam Hanania Jr., Mary Hanania, Catherine Hanania, and Joseph Hanania. Norman was a dedicated grandfather who never missed a sporting event, recital, or award ceremony for his beloved grandchildren and was always their number one supporter. He cherished all of his nieces, nephews, godchildren, and friends. At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Naim (Norman) Elias Hanania can be made to "Saint George Orthodox Church" and mailed to 6300 Bowden Rd. , Jacksonville, FL 32216 or donate online by clicking on the following link: https://jaxorthodox.com/donate Due to the current circumstances of the Coronavirus pandemic, and out of abundance of caution and concerns for everybody safety, as well as the CDC guidelines; the funeral and graveside services for the late Naim (Norman) Elias Hanania will be limited to the family. However, condolences may be offered to the family via phone call/ text messages or via Facebook. Once circumstances improve and normal life returns, those who would like to offer condolences to the family in person may do so at that time. Funeral and graveside services which will be private for family only due to Covid 19 restrictions, and will be led by the Very Reverend Father Kamal Al-Rahil. All services will be held at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Legacy Lodge, 4801 San Jose Boulevard, Jacksonville, FL 32207. Face mask covering the nose and mouth are required to be worn by all attendees of the service at all times. Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel is proudly serving the family.
