The camera stopped filming when Norman A. Rickard, our beloved father and grandfather, passed away on April 11, 2016 after a brief illness. An avid camera and film enthusiast, Norman documented dance recitals and special family occasions throughout our lives. He was born August 30, 1927 in Penney Farms, Florida to Mae E. and Dewey M. Rickard. After graduating from Robert E. Lee High School in 1945, he joined the Marines and served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. Norman married Mervyn White in 1948 and began his career as a Certified Orthotist with Bremer Brace Company before opening his own business, Ortho-Surgical Fitters. He also lovingly helped his wife behind the scenes by tirelessly working on the scenery and lighting and turned her dance recitals into works of art for over 50 years. Norman worked on stage productions for various professional venues and was a member of Local 115 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. He received his gold card in 2007 after 34 years of service. He was also a member of the Little Theatre of Jacksonville and acted in several plays in the late 1950s.
Norman was predeceased by his parents, and loving wife, Mervyn. He is survived by daughters, Kim (Bill) Tate, and Marnie (Alan) Deal; grandchildren, Travis, Adam, Madison, and Olivia; his sister, Dorothy R. Jones; and nephew, Chris Thompson.
Norm, or “Daddy Rick” as he was affectionately known, was loved by all and had a life well lived. A celebration of his life will be held Tuesday, April 19, 2016 from 5:30-7:30 at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel. The family would like to thank the staff at Brookdale Mandarin Central for four years of loving care. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Community Hospice.
