Penelope Roberts Smith passed away peacefully on September 20, 2023, after a long battle with cancer. Penelope (Penny) Roberts was born on March 7, 1947, to Alma Corine Chester and John Theodore Roberts in Jacksonville, Florida. She was preceded in death by her husband Gordon Dallas Smith, parents, her sister Sue R. Barineau and husband Deryl E. Barineau her brother William T. Roberts and wife Deborah Roberts.
Penny was a lifelong resident of Jacksonville and a graduate of Ribault High School. She attended Jacksonville University, where she received her degree in Elementary Education in 1967. She went on to earn a master's from Florida State University, as an Educational Media Specialist. Penny served Duval County Schools for a total of 40 years before retiring.
Penny was very active in the Methodist Church beginning with Riverview Methodist, serving in the choir and later as church pianist and organist. She was a part of the United Methodist Women and served on the Financial Board of her congregation. Her last church home was at Callahan United Methodist.
Penny also was a volunteer member of the Civil Air Patrol reaching the rank of Captain.
Penny was known for her generous heart, quick wit, and love for the Lord. She will be missed by her friends and family. She is survived by nieces Cindy Traylor (Doug), Joan Alford (Jeff), Alison Parker (Shelby), Vanessa Roberts, and nephew Willian Torey Roberts (Kayla). Grandnieces Claire Alford-Rose (Justin), Natalie Thurlow (Rob), Aislinn Parker (Shelby). Grandnephews Brian Alford, Avery Parker, Grayson Roberts, Wesley Roberts and one great grandniece Elouise Thurlow.
A funeral service for Penelope will be held Friday, September 29, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Callahan Methodist Church, 449648 US-301, Callahan, FL 32011. A committal service will be held Saturday, September 30, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Restlawn Memorial Park., 2600 Ribault Scenic Dr, Jacksonville, FL 32208.
