Reginald Calvin Haywood was born on July 30,1954 to the late Clarence Haywood and Irma Kelly in Jacksonville, Florida. Both were devoted to the Christian ministry which profoundly influenced Reginald and laid the foundation for his path in life. Having a solid Christian background, a true love for Christ, and an affinity for music, Reginald was drawn to the Music Ministry at an early age where he served for over 45 years. He worked with countless choirs, ensembles, and musicians, always serving as a spiritual leader in the ministry. His unique touch and skills in music were incomparable. When he closed his eyes while playing the piano, he would say, “the Spirit is here.”
Reginald’s love for music was fostered by his older brother, the late Raymond Love, Jr. (Ray). It was Ray who placed the first saxophone in Reginald’s hands and unlocked the door to a musical genius. Reginald took his musical talents both nationally and internationally and played on stage with some of the world’s leading artists, such as Al Green, Rufus Thomas, Benny Lattimore, and The Bar-Kays. He received numerous awards throughout his lifetime and was a prominent local artist in both the Jacksonville and Ponte Vedra Beach communities. Reginald’s formal music education began at Northwestern Junior High School and Raines Senior High School. His talents led to a band scholarship to attend Florida A & M University where he played in the famous “Marching 100.” Reginald later graduated from Jacksonville University with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Composition.
As a music educator, Reginald taught at both the Duval County Public Schools and privately. He has touched the lives of hundreds of students of all avenues of life. Whether his students were aspiring to attend top-tier universities such as The Julliard School or simply wanted to play for enjoyment, he had a specific method that was tailored to each of their goals and would leave a lasting impact.
Reginald met his wife, Tammy Haywood of almost 25 years at Genesis Missionary Baptist Church, where the late Nelson Turpin served as pastor. He was devoted to both his wife and family and ensured they all understood the unshakeable power of prayer. He was not just a husband and father, but he was also a counselor, protector, confidant, provider, friend, travel buddy and so very much more.
He is survived by his wife, Tammy, and his children, Jaundalyn (Phil), Randall (April), Brittani (Anthony), Jenay, and Brandy; his six grandchildren, Chelyn, Jaylen, Jordyn, Jo’lee, Journie, and Aiden; his brother, Theodore Kelly (Alease); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Reginald was predeceased by his brothers, Ray Love (Lois) and Calvin Haywood. His unwavering love and commitment to his family was infectious and he will be deeply missed by us all.
