Richard Harold Barry, 78, of Jacksonville, Florida passed away at Baptist South on May 11, 2021 due to COVID-19. He was born in Westfield, MA and grew up in Jacksonville. Richard was predeceased by his father, Donald A. Barry, Sr. He leaves behind his mother, Mildred Barry; three children, Toni, Marc and Angela Barry; his two brothers, Donald Jr. (Carrie), Robert (Dena); and his sister, Kathleen (Jeff) Stieglitz.
Richard started his working career as early as 10 years old as a bag boy at Jax Meat and his strong work ethic continued until the end of his life. After graduating from Landon High School in 1960, he served in the Navy and then attended Florida Junior College. He had a long and successful career with Jacksonville Shipyards for over 28 years until they closed. He franchised a Flowers Baking route until he retired. That did not last long, he then went to work full time for Walmart and has been there for over 15 years. He will truly be missed by many.
Richard enjoyed and cherished playing Pinochle cards with his mother, deep sea fishing, Alhambra plays and church activities. He loved the Lord and was a true servant. When asked about his most significant learning since Landon: “My Lord and Savior is Jesus Christ. I know he has turned my life around in the past 30 years. Life is a challenge every day. I know my life has been a hard one, but I just keep getting up and turning each day over to the Lord. He’ll get us through this life!” Favorite Bible verse was Phil 4:13.
He would start each day in the Bible. He would always provide advice like, “Turn it over to the Lord” and “Do what is Right in His Sight”. He lived his life giving and helping others. “People are Important, Things are Not”. His favorite music was Southern Gospel and his favorite songs were “How Great Thou Art” and “Because He Lives”. Although we will miss him dearly, we know that he is in heaven and in the arms of Jesus.
A celebration of life and committal service with military honors will be held at Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Road, Jacksonville, FL 32218 on Thursday, August 19 at 2 PM.
