Roy Hawkins

HAWKINS, Roy Hawkins, 81, born Aug. 9, 1925 in Cove City, N.C., passed away Friday, June 1, 2007 in St. Vincent’s Hospital after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Eloise Boyer Hawkins; daughters: Brenda (John) Andrews and Connie (John) Roberts; sister, Rachel McCoy and children; grandchildren: Tammy (Steve) Russell, Ron (Christine) Thomas, Daryn Wimpy, Clint Andrews; and 8 great grandchildren. He was founder and owner of Webco Tires and Southern Wheel and Rim until he sold them to Firestone in 1988 and retired. He is best known in Jacksonville and surrounding states for his wonderful Christmas lights display on Capper Road, which he looked forward to every year. Roy was a World War II veteran (U.S. Navy) and served most of his tour of duty on the Battleship Missouri and was there for the signing of the Peace Treaty. He was a member of Gardenview Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 6th at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home, 1426 Rowe Ave., with Rev. Todd Alvarez, officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, June 5th from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Ron Thomas, Daryn Wimpy, Clint Andrews, Steve Russell, John Andrews and John Roberts. Honorary pallbearers will be Grady Braddock, Charlie Crews, Grumpy Higginbotham, Ferrell Alexander, Joe Wheeler, Troy Cashwell, Dan Boswell, Leon Starling, Syd Crosby, Brooks Faison, Jimmy Civils and Ken Allen. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to many people.
