Russell “Frank” Franklin Matthews, age 80, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away on March 8, 2026. A lifelong resident of Jacksonville, with the exception of brief stays in Maine and Daytona, he was born on January 3, 1946, to the late Maxwell and Jewel Matthews.
Frank graduated from Terry Parker High School in 1964 and later attended Jacksonville University and Jones College. Construction was always a part of his life, as it was a family business and trade that he proudly continued throughout his career.
He spent most of his life working in the construction industry. During the 1980s, he served as a superintendent with Summer Homes, where he oversaw the construction of many homes throughout the Jacksonville area. Later, he worked alongside his son Alan as co-owner of River City Builders. In his later years, Frank worked with the City of Jacksonville on programs that helped teach construction skills to inmates, giving many the opportunity to learn a trade and a chance at a better future.
In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his siblings, Donald “Buddy” Matthews, Barbara Anne “Bobbi” Myers, and Maxwell “Butch” Matthews, as well as his son, Anthony “Tony” Hundley.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Hazel Matthews; his daughter, Vicki Matthews; and his son, Alan Matthews (Debbie). He is also survived by his siblings, Junita “Nene” Wolfe and Jackie Matthews. Frank leaves behind eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, along with many other children throughout his life who also lovingly called him “Papa.” He was dearly loved by his many nieces, nephews, and cousins and will be remembered as a loyal friend to many.
Frank will be remembered for his strong work ethic, generous heart, and deep love for his family. He was the kind of father and “Papa” who showed up for everything, including school events, ball games, and band performances, always present and supportive of the ones he loved. Holidays were especially important to him, particularly those that ended with fireworks, and he never hesitated to bring along all the kids’ friends because, to Frank, everyone was family.
He remained a kid at heart and may well have been the original “fun uncle.” If Frank was around, there was certain to be laughter and perhaps a little bit of mischief—but it was always going to be fun. His spirit, kindness, and the many memories he created will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
He leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a legacy of love that will never be forgotten.
A memorial service will be held on April 4 at 2:00 p.m. at Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home, 940 Cesery Boulevard, Jacksonville, Florida 32211.
