Sam was born on May 21, 1926 to Isser and Rae Price in Jacksonville, Florida. After graduating from Robert E. Lee High School in 1943, Sam enlisted in the Navy to see the world and he did. He served as a Seaman First Class in World War II from 1944-1946 as a Tin Can Sailor aboard the USS Gainard, a destroyer ship that was vital to the United States in Okinawa and throughout the Pacific. After the war, Sam attended the University of Florida, an institution for which he never lost his passion.
Sam was a builder. He built subdivisions, housing, warehouse buildings, hotels, and shopping malls. But Sam also built a family. A family who adored him as their steady and loyal patriarch, and whose legacy of love and commitment to his family and community will live on for generations to come. Sam was also a world traveler, having visited over one hundred countries. Sam simply loved living.
In 1979, Sam’s love for family and the University of Florida culminated in he and his late brother, Jack Price, a fellow alumni of the college, endowing the University's Judaica library. The Isser and Rae Price Library of Judaica was formally dedicated in March 1981, in honor of Sam and Jack's parents, Isser and Rae Price, both of whom were outstanding members of the Jewish community who helped establish the Jacksonville Jewish Center in the 1920s. Isser and Rae had raised their children with a deep commitment to the Jewish community, a love of philanthropy and a profound sense of the importance of education. Sam was committed to passing these values on to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Sam is preceded in death by his parents, his dear brother Jack, and by his son, Todd Price (Orah). Sam is survived by his wife of 32 years, Faye, his sons Ira (Carol), Charles (Lauren), Jonathan, daughter, Ellice Berg (Scott), stepdaughters Hannah and Sherri Silverman, sisters, Eunice Zisser (Barry) and Florence Schemer (Gerald), and his grandchildren, Dana Price, Lindsay (Fernando) Alvarez, Isser Benjamin Price (Maria), Amy Sandberg, Zachary (Tjissje) Price, Lorenzo Najt, Alexandra Ashbaugh, Lauren and Liam Berg, and his many great-grandchildren.
Donations in his memory may be made to the University of Florida Isser and Rae Price Library of Judaica, The Jacksonville Jewish Center, River Garden Hebrew Home, or any other Jewish charity in the area.
