

Dr. Samuel G. Rosenthal passed away in his home on December 10, 2015. Born in Yonkers, New York on May 28, 1939, he was the eldest son of Dr. Ben and Rachel Rosenthal. Upon graduating from Yeshiva University, he attended Upstate Medical School in Syracuse, New York and went on to become Chief Resident in Plastic Surgery at Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, where he received his board certifications in General and Plastic Surgery. He proudly served as an officer in the United States Navy at Jacksonville Naval Air Station. Following the Navy, Dr. Rosenthal established his private practice specializing in cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery in Jacksonville where he practiced for well over forty years. He had an energetic mind with interests in art, gardening (best kumquats and satsumas!), literature, philosophy, fencing (#1 epee man in college and even went out for the Olympics in his 40s), and sculpting for which he was recognized nationally. He was also published nationally and affiliated with many organizations including the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and most notably with the American Cleft Palate Association where he donated his time and skills for many years. Dr. Rosenthal, a lifelong supporter of Israel Bonds, was the second American recipient of the Maimonides Award and honored by Prime Minister Menachem Begin.
He is survived by his children: Caryn Beth Rosenthal (NYC), Brad Rosenthal (Stephanie), Pamela Jill D'Amato (Peter)l; his grandchildren, Levi and Oscar D'Amato; his siblings, Dorothy Mandelbaum, Edward Rosenthal and John Scott. He is also survived by Elaine R. Rosenthal, who was there for him during his illness.
Dr. Rosenthal lived a full life of warmth, humor and generosity and was often described by those who knew him or even met him for a moment, as larger than life. He will be remembered and missed by his family, friends and community. Contributions in Dr. Samuel G. Rosenthal's memory may be made to the Martin J. Gottlieb Day School at the Jacksonville Jewish Center or to an Israel-related charity.
