Santiago’s life was rooted in his love for God, his family, and his friends. He was a loyal and patient man who never allowed the world to dictate who he was; instead, he embraced the individuality and curiosity that God placed within him.
A lifelong learner, Santiago had an insatiable appetite for knowledge and a deep passion for research. His interests spanned car engines, politics, theology, mathematical theory, statistics, paintball, guns, football, music, ancient Aztec culture, education, and government. He enjoyed a good debate, especially with those who could handle his sharp intellect and well-researched perspective. He often reminded those around him that “the 90s was peak humanity.”
Santiago was not one for fleeting trends or social media, which he often described as “the downfall of man.” Instead, he invested his time in reading, reflecting, and pursuing wisdom at an academic level. He delighted in teaching, and he cared deeply for his students, colleagues, and the teaching profession as a whole. His patience and steadfastness in the classroom were qualities of a true educator.
For nearly 20 years, Santiago faithfully served the Campbell Union High School District, where he also held the role of president of the Campbell High School Teachers Association for almost a decade. When his family moved to Florida, he continued his vocation at The Bolles School, where he shared his love of mathematics and mentored students with the same dedication that had marked his entire career. His impact, like the wings of a butterfly, continues to ripple outward into the lives of countless students, families, and colleagues.
Santiago loved his family with devotion. His brother was his best friend, and he cherished the role of husband and father above all. He is survived by his beloved wife, Melanie, and their two daughters, Avonlea and Gwendalyn, who were the joy of his life.
Santiago will be remembered as a man of wisdom, individuality, humor, and unwavering faith. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and in the family who loved him dearly.
In his 14-month battle with colon cancer, Santiago was steadfast in his fight for life, having so much to live for. He worked an entire school year, missing only the days of his chemotherapy treatments, and never showing anything but resilience and fight. He worked up until the end and never let the cancer define who he was. He fought it in the arena with God at his side. He never once complained, but faced each day with courage.
The family would like to thank the local support of V for Victory, who have stood alongside them since May by providing services for the family. They also wish to thank the hundreds of families and friends who lifted them in prayer and support throughout this journey.
We would like to extend our gratitude to the Bolles community, the Saint Joseph Catholic School community, and our church family at The Church of Eleven22 for the outpouring of love. To our wonderful family and community of friends, we love you forever. From near and far, across the country, we have felt the embrace of so many people who love us, and we are deeply grateful.
