

Dr. Stephen Allen Broadman died on Wednesday, May 8, 2013, while in the loving care of North Florida Community Hospice and River Garden Hebrew Home in Jacksonville, Florida. The son of Ralph and Gertrude Broadman, he was born in Rochester, New York on November 3, 1940. He was raised in Buffalo, New York, where he was an active participant in the Boy Scouts of America and achieved the Order of the Eagle Scout. He graduated from South Park High School. With a swimming scholarship and New York Board of Regents scholarship, he attended the University of Buffalo. He then graduated with a degree in pharmacy. He supported himself as a pharmacist and graduated from medical school at the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kansas City, Missouri.
He completed an internship at Botsford-Ziegler Hospital in Farmington Hills, Michigan and a residency in radiology at Lancaster County Osteopathic Hospital in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He received additional certification both in radiology and nuclear medicine. He then practiced at Allegheny County Osteopathic Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before moving to Jacksonville, Florida.
In Florida, he was a radiologist at Jacksonville General Hospital, Shands Hospital, Lake City Hospital, and Green Cove Springs Hospital. He was also a civilian contractor at the hospitals of Mayport and Naval Air Station, the VA Hospital of Jacksonville, and the VA Hospital of Lake City.
Stephen was a member of the American Osteopathic Association, the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association, and a fellow of the American Osteopathic College of Radiology. For thirty-five years, he was a member of the Jacksonville Jewish Center and served on the board. He was a committed Zionist and served as a regional chair of the State of Israel Bonds. He was a Shriner and a Mason, as his father before him.
Stephen is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Ruchel Broadman; by his daughters, Dr. Melissa Broadman of Huntington Woods, Michigan; Dr. Jennifer (Dr. Jay) Kugler of Ashburn, Virginia; and Suzanne (Dr. Eric) Bershad of Pearland, Texas; his sister, Rose (Dr. Richard) Packard; mother-in-law, Mrs. Elsie Yellin; and five loving grandchildren, Nathan, Max, Miriam, Georgette, and Joshua.
He was known for his work ethic and sarcastic wit. He had several hobbies, including Israeli and American stamp collecting, coin collecting, jogging and SCUBA diving. He was a voracious reader. Among his family’s cherished memories of him, was his yearly ritual of handing out Israeli coins to the children after the search for the afikomen at the family Passover seder.
After a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease, he is resting peacefully. Funeral services were held for him at the New Center Cemetery. His family greatly appreciates all the kind words and gestures of their friends and colleagues at this time.
