Stephen Francis Wacek

September 22, 1948March 4, 2018

Stephen (Steve) Francis Wacek, beloved father, grandfather, and friend, went home to be with the Lord on March 4, 2018. Steve was born on September 22, 1948 in Sioux City, Iowa to parents John and Margaret Wacek. He graduated from Bishop Heelan High School and then attended Westmar College. Before completing his degree, Steve left Iowa to work for his brother at Jack Reed Studios and later at Borg-Warner/Transamerica. He spent much of his time traveling and lived all over the Midwest and Texas before settling in Florida. Steve went on to be a dedicated employee and manager at American General Financial Services, spending over twenty years working for the company. He was recognized for his service as the company’s Best Operator of the Year several years in a row. After retiring in Orange Park, Florida, Steve enjoyed working part time for car dealerships during events. Steve was infinitely dedicated to his family. His daughter was the light of his life and he loved talking to her about sports and politics. They had lots of adventures together and he was so proud to see her become an attorney. His grandchildren were his world and he spent time with them often. Steve was a zealous golfer, a lefty like his contemporary favorite Phil Mickelson. He enjoyed being on the course with his buddies and son-in-law as often as he could. When he wasn’t practicing his swing, you could find him at the dog or horse tracks placing bets on his picks. He enjoyed the research and the beauty of the horses equally. Steve was a Dallas Cowboys fan and would always cheer for them on Sundays. He was an outdoorsman in that he enjoyed walking and sunshine daily. A cloudy day was his worst nightmare. Steve is survived by his only daughter, Cara L. (Wacek) Powell and husband Cody of Tampa, Florida and two grandchildren, Chloe Declan Powell and Asher Fitzgerald Powell of Tampa, Florida. He is also survived by his niece, Julia Choate (Ron) of Marana, Arizona. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society. A Memorial Service commemorating his life will be held at 11 am on Saturday, March, 17, 2018 in Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home of Mandarin. Arrangements are under the care and direction of HARDAGE-GIDDENS FUNERAL HOME OF MANDARIN, 11801 San Jose Blvd. Jacksonville, FL 32223. (904) 288-0025.
